Just outside of Madrid the Sanatorio de La Barranca is an abandoned building located in the municipality of Navacerrada, which until 1995 functioned as a psychiatric hospital, previously it also operated an anti-tuberculosis sanatorium.
I decided to do a bit of exploring of the abandoned site to see what state it was in. Its situation is delightful with stunning scenery, presumably the mountain air was deemed of benefit to the patients.
In the mid-twentieth century the National Antituberculosis Trust, under the Ministry of Health, built several sanatoriums isolated from the urban centers throughout the Spain to treat some of the serious pandemics that were ravaging the civilian population; such as tuberculosis , leprosy , polio, fibrosis and lung cancer . Several of them were located in the Sierra de Guadarrama , such as La Barranca, whose construction dates back to 1941.
The Sierra de Guadarrama (Guadarrama Mountains) is a mountain range forming the main eastern section of the Sistema Central, the system of mountain ranges along the centre of the Iberian Peninsula.
